Keeper sturgeon season on the middle stretches of the Columbia is wrapping up! This year, mainly because of a milder winter, the bite has been decent since the season opened on January 1st. The Dalles pool is closed, and the John Day Pool is nearing the state dictated quota. I would assume that it will close this week. We were able to hit the River Saturday with a boat load of clients and saw a lot more pressure this weekend as compared to the last few. We were able to get into some good water and once anchored, we started getting bites right away. After 4-5 40 inch shakers, we finally found a bigger fish and was able to get it into the boat! Herring and squid were the baits of choice. Adding extra scent was key as the water was a bit off colored. I like to just match my baits as far as scent goes. If I am using herring, herring oil etc. Once this keeper season closes, I will start running keeper sturgeon trips on the Hanford Reach, which opens February 1st. I will also be transitioning over to walleye and focusing on that as well as preparing for Spring Salmon, which is right around the corner! Give me a call ASAP to get your springer and walleye trips booked! I am filling up fast this season and would love to get my NWFR members on the boat!
Thanks!
