Just when you think the fishing will be starting to slow more start showing up. We have been getting great Chinook and a few Coho in the Columbia. This week I will still be fishing the Columbia and then be moving into the Cowlitz chasing the Coho and Chinook.

Spent the last few days trolling for Chinook on the Columbia. Bite is best around the tide changes using Pro Troll and Brad's Super Bait. Water Temp has started to cool making the fish more active. I am looking at good fishing into October.

left my house at about noon to go down and fish by the mouth of the cowlitz. had camp set up by 3 at the paradise point state park. Me and my fishing partner were bored so we went to rainier, oregon to launch. We got the boat in the water and as mt partner was walking down he ran into a friend who was getting off of a guides boat. The acquaintance did not get a fish and asked if we had room on my boat , I don't mind ( plus this was my first time fishing the mouth of the cowlitz using wobblers) if he comes so off we go. The current was pretty slow ,but we talked and fished until 7:30 p.m. before we called it quits. did not get a bite ,but did have salmon passing by hitting our lines. Woke up at 3:45 on wed. morning and was gone by 4:15 to go join the royal fleet. was able to get a pretty good sized king into the boat , lost another before the current really slowed down and my motion sickness kicked in. We loaded the boat and went to bob's sporting goods to spend 70$ on a couple new wobblers. While we were loading the boat we talked to an older guy who had caught 4 the day before and he told us how he was rigging up ( giant tip) . Went back to camp even more determined that the next day would reap rewards. Woke up on thursday at 3AM left bt 330 in the water by 430 to rejoin the armada Had 1 that straightened the ring on a brand new clancy's wobbler ( it was the ring that connected the hook to the wobbler) did get another early on that was about 12-14 lbs. Went back to camp tired as crap so went to sleep and woke up at 4 the next morning. We launched again to rejoin her majesties royal fleet. Seen a boat in the line upriver from us that pulled 7 out , we only had 1 hookup and lost it by the boat (barbless hooks). We both agree that we are to close to the washington shore , so we mark a waypoint out in 55 ft. of water where we was able to see some fish on my new garmin 741xs ( this fishfinder does NOT lie). We go back to camp and go back to sleep to wake up at 4 once again to redo what we have been doing all the previous days . I hook into an awesome fish and when i go to start the motor to get away from the armada so i can fight the fish my motor barely turns over (*#$& my battery is dead) I end up losing the fish and get a really expensive ticket from the columbia county sheriff"s office for not having my boat registration and not having a charged battery. I am DONE at this point!!! In the morning we head back home , we are both a little unhappy with the way it all turned out. Oh yeah iforgot to mention the spring in the recoil of my kicker that last morning broke and the rope would not recoil on my honda kicker. I had fun ,but it always could have been a little better.

Tried our hand at catching "Squawfish" or Northern Pikeminnow for any of you who prefer to be politically correct. Had no earthly idea what I was doing but here is what I learned...
1) Squawfish like to hid behind objects where they can ambush Salmon/Steelhead smolts. Fishing behind structure produced more fish.
2) They like worms and chicken liver which is what we used as bait. (liver produced more fish when it stayed on)
3) Chicken liver does not stay on the hooks even with an egg loop so next time I'm going to use spawn sacks to hold the bait together combined with the egg loop should work better.
4) There is a significant tide change on the Columbia even that far up river. )Bring weights ranging from 1/4 oz to 1 1/2 oz)
5) Slack tides produce more fish.
6) Your first time fishing you get an extra 10 dollars per angler that catches one fish greater than 9"
7) Juveniles fish for free so write the word "Juvenile" where is asks for their license number.
8) Fill out your paperwork when you get there and leave it in the box... you must return with your fish between 1:30 and 5:30 daily to check them in.
9) Bring a measuring device to know which are over 9". Though there is no size limit the only fish that pay are over 9". We caught fish ranging from 16" to 9 1/4"
10) It's easy.

There were five of us in the boat each caught 1x fish so we got vouchers for 75$. We fished near Kalama which is an excellent boat launch though the parking lot is being repaved which was a dirt/pothole mess. Take a kid or yourself catch a Squawfish and "save a Salmon".

We picked up a nice 14 lb buck today out on the Columbia. It crushed a chartreuse with Pro Cure anise green label herring on a custom Fish Flash. This 11 year old Natalee Yoakum's first Spring Chinook. I have a couple seats open for this Friday and Saturday. Let me know if you want to hop in. Thanks, Joel

Spring isn't here yet but some of the fish are. Hooked into 4 Chinook on the lower Columbia out of Kalama last Monday. In 4 trips now we hooked into 10 kings. Lost a few, sea lion took another and tossed back a nice native buck. Ended up with 3 fish on the deck, one being a fat 18.5lb buck. The key for me was to find some lazy water off next to an island and troll really slow as long as your green label herring is still spinning tightly. I used short 4 ft leaders and mixed up some 8" and 10" Fish Flash for the bling. Pink on Chart and Red on Chart were the best colors. Make sure to let these springers tug on your line for a while before you lift up the rod. Let them hook themselves, the boat and the rods will do the work. Back at it again this Thursday. Wish me luck! - Joel Henley

Holy wow, where do I start. I have had good days for pikeminnow bounty fishing. But today took the cake! I wen through a brand new dozen count worms in 2 hours. The bite was on! Fished kalama marina and I mean every single boat slip. Popped my pontoon in and oared around to all the spots I had only hoped to fish. The bite was on as soon as slack tide hit. Then it got even better when it started heading out. I vertical bounced the worms like jigs. My god does it work great! I was able to land 21 minnows in the two hours. I lost count as to how many bites I missed. They're really soft mouthed right now.

Woke up at 4:30am drove from Longview, WA to Warren, OR where we met our guide. We spent most of the day trolling up and down the Columbia. We seen 2 fish taken by boats and 4 fish taken by Sea Lions! The weather was spotty one minute the sun would be out the next the hail stones were out to get us. No Fish!

Launched At Kalama marina 7AM to a clear but foggy morning no GPS so decided to head straight across to the island as visibility was limited. Set up a downstream troll using fish flash and dyed blue herring first pass nada, second run downstream I hang up an the bottom and lose my rigging . Retie without fish flash since my spare was at home. I spot some fish on the depth sounder and think to myself that looks promising about that time pole doubles over and drag is screaming of the reel nice battle at boat side with several runs under the boat. but fish finally in the net No extra fins so is a great day water temps 47 degrees visibility four feet, boat back on the trailer by nine thirty heading home
