I arrived at Heart Lake at 5:30 pm to fish the evening. There were about 15 to 20 boats on the water and several fishing from the bank. No major wind issues, cloudy and overcast, air temp was 61 degrees F, water temp was 55 deg F. I started out trolling a red flatfish with black dots on it and worked between that and a dark brown one and in 2 hours had my limit and was off the lake. They weren’t jumpin in the boat by any means (which is why I rated the fishing as a 3) but it was fun and nice to be out on the water. The fish were all about 13 inches and fought well. I trolled the deeper side of the lake (to the right of the launch as you are looking at the lake from the launch), the water depth is 19 to 21 feet, fish holding at about 10’. Here is the kicker which I will mention in a forum; Sam Kafelafish mentioned in a recent trout lure post to remove the treble hook from the flat fish and put on a single Gamakatsu size 8 Siwash hook for better hook set. Folks, this made all the difference in the world when it came to hooking these fish. All 5 of the trout hooked themselves in the jaw leaving a minuscule chance of spitting the hook. I did not miss a strike. There was a very noticeable difference using these single hooks. So, to Sam, thanks for the tip, much appreciated and from me, highly recommended..
