This is the first time posting but have been watching this site for a long time. I have been fishing this lake for many years but have actually fine tuned this fishery in the last five years. This is the first time since last fall and was very slow. I tried the herring and the squid with no luck, this was a new technique so I wasn't confident but I stuck with it for most of the morning. I could use some more advice as to the size of herring, leader, etc. At any rate after a while I went to my favorite spoon and pop gear and finally nailed a 17" cutthroat. That was it! We started in the south end near the mouth of the Cedar or close to it, then the south end (west side) of Mercer. We had one possible hit but other than that it was quiet. I was marking more along Rainier Ave. near the Cedar but was not very active. Finally, we went to my most productive spot at I-90 and got the fish.

It was still a great day! Cold but no snow or rain and had a good time with a buddy of mine. Even though we didn"t catch a lot it's been a while since I"ve been skunked on this lake.

There weren't any boats in the morning but I did see a few of you guys as I was coming off. If you ever see me I'm the guy in the Blue/white 93' Bayliner. You guys all seem like a good group so I hope to see you at there. Good Luck!

By the way, you probably read it already but, I found a good paper by Beaucamp from the U of W who wrote a good paper about the Cutthroat in Lake Washington. If your interested I can give more info.

Hey cutthroatkiller... Good article on Cutthroats. I'm primarily a flyfisher (no boat!) but I'm still interested in Lake Washington Cutthroats. Thanks for the good info......

Use Orange Label size herring. Brine until they sort of stiff and will keep the kink you bend into them. Rig with two hooks something like mooching style. The bait should be 100' behind the downrigger clip. Red in color hooks seemed to work best.

So the best herring I could find was yellow label? 3" was the smallest, kind of hard to find smaller. What do you use for brine? I use the first hook through eye and across backbone and follow through with second trailing the hook. Is this correct, it has been a long time using herring. Also one more question. What size/type hook? I've heard using 000 dodge r or no dodge r at all. Anyway, I'm hoping to be out there this Sunday and possibly Saturday. Hope to see some of you out there. I have never heard of yellow label herring. You sould get by with 3" or maybe you could even plug cut 'em.
