3/9/2009 10:13:00 AMI just love when people think that catching and RELEASING the big perch will keep big perch in the lake. The truth is that if you don't catch and keep just about all of the perch you can, the lake will overpopulate and the size goes down. I have seen how perch can ruin a lake over and over and over again. Worse yet, Elokia is a mess of weeds, and normally that means the perch have an advantage over the Bass and again, overpopulation.
Elokia is a special lake, and I suggest that to keep it special, catch and keep all the perch you can. Be selective with the Crappie, be very selective with the Bass, but keep those perch.

If it's legal to keep the fish then that is the angler's right. Case closed. Behind ya 100% Man, I am impressed that you take friends and (younger) family members out to enjoy the sport of fishing, and would like to say Thank You for sharing your adventures with us here on WL. I (and many others) have brought home a "Bunch" of perch to fillet, and this time of year a person is going to catch the fat females (I read where The average number of eggs laid per female is 23000), and to keep several of them we catch isn't going to deplete the population. I personally like to catch perch (in great numbers if I'm lucky), this time of year and freeze up a bunch to eat during the warmer months to come. BUT that is just a perconal decision. So I hope the negative comments posted won't keep ya from posting more pics in the future, and sharing your trips with those of us who appreciate it.

I have been lucky enough to have had a cabin on this wonderful lake for the last 25 years and even more lucky to have fished this lake every weekend for the last 15 years, in all these years i have seen a lot happen to this lake. its not the size of fish nor the amount i catch but the type. 10 years ago i could walk down do the dock and caught my limit of 18in browns in a good day of fishin yet no i am lucky to catch 2 in a year (which i always return). the point is Eloika is a great lake and the spiny ray have taken out most of the native fish population. perch are a fun fish and one im sure many of us started out fishing for but with the ave female laying over 20000 eggs we could all catch ass many as WE deem fit and it still would harm the lake. so cheever look at the history of the lake see the loss your perch have caused and rethink your views before you try and disrupt my post....for everyone else thanks for all the support.

3/10/2009 9:11:00 AMJumpin' Jimminy Crickets that's a nice mess of perch you have there! Those will make some tasty fillets, I'm envious. Great pic, it's easy to see why perch are so prolific, you'd never see a trout that loaded with eggs.

First, I bet you are using too large a jig, too heavy a line, and too stiff a rod, or too large a bobber/indicator. Of course I don't know you, and I am only guessing, but 99% of ice fishermen do just that. I could be wrong of course.
I like to fish for perch this time of year with a rod that is 24 to 36 inches long, and with 2 to 4 pound mono, very thin, or 6 pound crystal fireline. This super light rod (can you say wet noodle) allows the perch to mouth the bait without feeling the resistance. The super fine line allows the super small bait (1/32 oz and smaller - I have used 1/100 oz before) to fall better and move more naturally while jigging. I try to use maggots over meal worms or worms, because this time of year smaller is always better.
As for colors, I have a lot of options in my tackle box. White is good, but often oranges, blacks, greens, yellows, and mixes are better. Ice jigs with crystal flash or other moving and bright appendages can also help.
Additionally, look for existing holes where there is blood on the ice. Perch bleed when they are tossed on the ice, and if a hole grouped is well used, and there is blood on the ice, then probably someone else has located the school. This time of year the perch will be schooling pretty tight in preparation for the spawn, so finding them can mean you can catch a 5 gallon bucket of them. 10 yards away you might get skunked.

3/10/2009 3:06:00 PMwell guys i use a swedish pimple with a tip of worm, i rig it with 20lb braid and 18in leader on a three foot micro lite pole. 8 feet down and jig it every ten to fifteen seconds. if any one wants to go out some time i wouldnt mine "guiding" i could show you what and how i do it. like i said before i have alot of time spent on this lake so i know what when and where to go lol ill be up there this weekend if anyone wants a bucket of perch( ps this time im takin the neighbor boy and a few of his friends maybe i can get em hooked on fishin)

3/16/2009 8:49:00 PMStiman87. The Jigmiester here. I'm an ex 82nd Airborn paratrooper who loves to crappie fish. You hit it right on the head when refering to ice fishing for pre-spawn perch and crappie. The swedish pimple jigging spoon tipped with maggots or a perch eye are hard to beat for late ice panfish. I use a lamiglass micro ultralite and a Shimano mk ULS spinning reel spooled with 4 lb Izorline to jig red flash /or chartruse silver swedish pimples with a 6-8 inch tagline to a 1/124th oz Turner jones micro jig with three maggots. This riggin' catches yellow perch to 13" as well as slab crappie and an occaisional bass. Sometimes, I'll switch to a Berkley 2" micro minnow soaked in crappie scent. These minnows are so realistic that any predator fish will scarf them down, even huge Walleye. I would love to share some secrets sometime. I fish BanksLake, Moses lake and Potholes Res. My biggest Crappie was a monster 21 and 3/4 incher from Banks in April of 07'. Thanks for your time.
