Fished St. Clair for the first time. Cast crankbaits, plastic worms/crays/minnows, dropshot nightcrawlers and "Gulp" minnows and crayfish. Not much happening. We caught 5 small largemouth in the 7" range and 3 inadvertant rainbows. Obviously, trying to figure lake out since this was first trip. The lake intrigued me. Tons of cover, snaggy lake with a snaggy bottom. It has the appearance of having just a ton of fish in it. Fish seemed to be close to shore but weed/grass line is still in 3-4 feet of water. Figure that there is a way to catch these fish and we are set to figure it out.
We fished from 1:15 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with very limited action. We did see 3 larger bass follow lure in to boat. Also, it was a beautiful afternoon and the 5mph speed limit is something that I really like. It alone will bring me back. Pleasant and peaceful and still think that lake has to be chocked full of spiney rays, somewhere and somehow there must be a way to get 'em.

Yeah when you figure it out let me know cause me and my buddy are just catching the small ones too. We had one maybe 2pounder on the other day on a worm but it got off. We had tons little followers, so the lake seemed to have a ton of fish. But just cant figure out where or how to get the big ones. We also were amazed at all the downed logs and sticks in the water in this lake. Seemed like a lot of cover for the bass. Well good luck out there!

If it is possible to figure it out, and if me and my buddy ever do, I would gladly let you know. My friend is more set on trying new and different stuff than I am, but I am willing. I thought the same as you, amazed at all the downed trees and limbs. Every dropshot that I tied on ended up being broke off. My buddy did catch one of those small bass on a drop shot and nightcrawler.
Well, it is 4:30 a.m. and I am off to American Lake. The trout fishing in there is as easy as pie, it seems, so we will totally concentrate on bass, but, lol, we will limit on trout, as well.

There are some toads in St. Clair.
They hold a bass tourney there every year, and I've seen 'em get 6+ pounders
The Olympian newspaper showed a guy once holding a 7-8lb LMB from St. Clair.
It has some big crawdads in it, too-- 20+yrs ago a buddy of mine caught a 4lb LMB with a 4" crawfish pokin out of its gut.
Its also got freshwater shrimp, and clams.
Very healthy and food filled lake.
