It was a day you dream about while you work during the week---fishing on an early spring day at Rock Lake. The weather was great; sunshine with NO WIND to speak of---the surface of the lake was smooth with evidence of the heartier bugs dancing on it. This lake is BIIIIG; the terrain surrounding the lake resembles the reservoir behind the Wanapum Dam: basalt cliffs forever. The fishermen on the lake were friendly (an important part of an enjoyable fishing expedition---ever try fishing with a lake full of jerks?) This was a lazy-day of fishing; the sun warming both the body and soul, and only the occasional tug-of-the-line reminding us that we were, indeed, fishing. We started out with crawdad lures, but most likely did not go deep enough with them (this lake is DEEP in spots and that is where the lunkers lurk) and since we came to this lake with the mission of experimentation, we tried rooster tails, Power Bait, still-fishing, we fished from places we knew were drop-offs !
(an old fish-finder was employed as a depth gauge) yet only when we trolled DEEP in the middle of the lake did we find success, catching some silvers (16"!!) using our ol' trusty lures---wedding rings. As we pulled ol' Likki Tikki back onto shore, we were greeting by a fellow fisherman who caught a couple of Brownies (biiiig uns!) and was justifiably proud. He went silent; went deep to get 'em. This was a grrrreat day fishing; this lake brings out the detective in you when you fish it!
