Bottom Fishing From Boat
Smallmouth Bass

Launched from Wenberg around 2:30 pm, and immediately dodged all the bikin clad girls who wanted me :). We headed to south where there seemed to be less boats, and jumped into the water first thing to cool off. From the get go, we started catching little smallies. Anything from 4" to about 1 pound. It was very consistent most of the day, with those little tail biters hitting quite often. So, we were happy to be catching on such a hot day.

We headed back north to the east side and fished the first cove just north of the launch. Same thing along this route... little dinks.

Next we jumped across to the west side where the shallow flats are at, and did the same thing. It wasnt until we got down towards the center of the lake that something decent happened. I tossed back towards a dock that had reeds just out by the shore, and got a nice bit of tension in my line. I reeled a small amount and set the hook. To my surprise it was not a dink. The fish fought quite softly at first, until it rose to the surface and took a leap. It was a monster! I fought the fish for a couple of minutes and finally boated her. 5 lb 11 oz LMB on the scale. Man my heart was racing. That is my largest fish easily! Unfortunatelly she wiggled strongly in my hand, just after the picture, and fell into the boat. Must have knocked her good, because she was slow to revive after that. I felt real bad, but eventually, it got strength and swam away.

Just 15 minutes later I hooked into this 4 lb 4 oz SMB and that was it for the night.

We had fun in the heat, kept cool, caught many dinks, and I improved my personal best.

Yeah, both were caught using a pumpkin/ nightcrawler color Senko. The LMB was on a 5" and the SMB was on a 4". I do have these sweet Yum Craw plastics that I used, but I gave up on them at first because we couldnt get anything over a pound. I will be trying these another time though, because I have seen Smallies from goodwin spit up some good size craws when caught.
