A tough day fishing (catching) on the RW, but a great day on the water.
Launched from the Corps launch around 0930ish with air temps in the 50s, and the surface water temp at 64 with a slight breeze. Overcast with showers in the afternoon. We headed to the lowermost pen area and enjoyed an uneventful ride upriver to the destination, seeing a few active blinds (waterfowl hunters) along the way. We arived to find several boaters in the area, with the majority trolling. Saw a few hits on the troller's rods, but didn't see any fish landed. Bait fishermen said they hadn't even got a bite. There were a few fish active on the surface scattered in the area, but no concentration of activity. We (Cindy & I) focused along the pens and cast jigs, spinners, flies, and crocodiles along the edge. We tried to keep the lure at a depth ranging from 6-15 feet deep (water depth ranges to 70 ft or so deep on the river side of the pens). We caught fish on a wide variety of lures, and couldn't establish a pattern, unless it was to constantly be changing the offering. Browns being the dominant producer. We did catch several on a size 12 hook ( and 1/32 oz jighead) with spun brown wool, and the chenell (sp) pellet fly immitation. Plastics were hit and miss today. and only caught one fish on the croc. We had fish come off on the Barbless # 12s today, but since the fish were not hitting aggressively, they may not have been hooking up well. I know we missed several hits on them. The current was very light to non at all today, and we usually have to work harder for our fish on those days. When using a small presentation with spinning gear we will ad a "small" splitshot above the offering, or utilize carolina rigging with a 20-24 in leader. Weight depends on the depth desired, and the current.
I kept one 6# 6oz trout at the pens area, and later in the eveniing we dropped down the river to Pump #3, and Cindy picked up a couple of small (2-3#) trout for supper, and I picked up a couple of yellow perch that went home with us. The perch were 11 & 11 3/4 inches. Big ones for us.
Saw WL member LakeChelanTrout (Joe) on the river, and he also said it was a slow bite. IF Joe is having a slow day, you can asume it IS a slow day, but he had picked up some hits, and landed fish, Nice to see ya Joe.

Hi ya afk, I was using a 1/8oz jighead with a plastic minnow immitation (1 1/2 in or so) similar to the gizzit. but more streamlined, and a dark color. One thing I forgot to mention in the report was the trout caught at this location was gorged out on small fry that looked like perch (but not sure) about 1 inch long. The Perch came out of 12 - 16 feet of water and I was putting the jig down in the salad. Jigging and ripping the jig back to the boat after a cast, the perch hit on the fall both times. It was getting late and the wind was making it difficult to keep the boat on the spot, so we called it a day and headed in. If I were to target the perch, I would take some worms with me, and tip the jig with a small piece of the worm. Seems to enhance the odds of a hook-up. Believe it or not, But I have used Big-D's pellet fly in theis area (pump #3) last year and caught several yellow perch on it. I think it simulated a scud or other aquatic creature. Next time up there I'll have to test the therory more.
