Well my daughter informed me she wanted to go fish and I had considered doing just that anyways so I chose to go to one of the lakes that I have been researching and rehabilitating. We hit the water about 10:30am a bit late for my likes but with my array of electronics it did not take me long to find what I was looking for. I turned my prized custom Crappie rod over to my daughter set up with one of my "Don's Dandy Crippie Jigs" in white while I was using a red firecracker. I was working my Minn-Kota attempting to stay on station of some fine looking marks on my Vexilar and wham my daughter was hooked up with what turned out to be the biggest slab crappie, (14 1/4") I have seen come out of any of the lakes I have been conducting research on. We caught a good dozen or so before the bite shut down, we kept 3 and released the rest. I am very proud of my daughter, she definitely has that Minnesota fish blood in her. It was most reassuring to have confirmed my research and to top it off we pounded them on my home made jigs. Home by 3pm and while I was cleaning up the fish our local nesting eagle was watching me clean and when I pulled the slab out to fillet up he got all excited just started chattering, so I asked him if he wanted it, I swear he understood me as I held up the filleted out carcass, so I went over to our pond and threw it by the shore and he was on it in a couple minutes after watching me bury the rest in the garden. Great day!

Hm nice, didn't even know they had any crappie in that lake. Did see someone there my only time fishing there with some long poles a few years ago but thought they might've just been fishing for bluegill, guess it might've been crappie.

Hey

Sandy Shore lake does not open to fishing until the last Saturday in April. Check your regs!

Ohh God, I don't know how that happened, I must be loosing it in my old age, not sure why I was thinking "Sandy Shore" lake, may have been that automated thing that comes up when you list your report, but my sincere apology as the lake we were at was Leland, not Sandy Shore. Not sure how to edit my report here, but anyways we were on Lake Leland. Imagine my surprise when I logged on this morning and read the two replies.. To jbball50, I don't think there are any crappie in Sandy Shore either. To Mike M, thanks for the wake up call ! I will see if I can figure out how to edit my report or maybe have admin remove it.

Haha oh okay, were you fishing in deeper water or around the shoreline? Haven't been up there for 2 years because last year I didn't really want to chance it with the algae bloom alerts they had but it's only at a warning level now instead of the red alert like it was last summer.

They were suspended at about 15', not that far off shore. Back to my fauxpaw "Sandy Shore" I think that is gated off until the season opens up any ways. Admin got this one squared away now. Thanks again! PS: I am marking some very big LMB's here and there...

Not sure if it was us,we drifted in around 5PM. When we arrived, there was somebody loading up a kayak. We'll be fishing here more this year. I really enjoy these lakes,I'm not a big fan of big water when I got the family with me. You know.....the ones that have every yahoo doing 80mph with no regard to anyone else. Back on track, this is a perfect lake and I'm "guessing" that it probably receives little pressure.
