After upending a piggy bank and counting the pennies decided not to head for Cathlamet to fish springers Fishing would have to be on one of the local lakes. Lake Samish, Lake Stevens and Lake Cavanaugh were considered with Lake Cavanaugh winning the vote.

I think that we launched around 9:00 this morning. After launching we headed to the west end of the lake and set up along the edge of the 70’ line just east of the island. The water temperature was hovering at around 42 degrees and I was marking fish in the top 15’ of water and also between 38’ and 54’. There was a thermocline at 22’. Fished one rod on the downrigger and one leadline rig. The lead line rig turned out to be most productive when fished at 1 ½ colors. The business end of the leadline rig was a red/hammered brass wedding band tipped with shoepeg corn. The downrigger was setup with a dodger and…a number of hooked offerings. When run 12-14” behind the dodger a dark green woollybugger look alike, a purple dick night spoon, an almost clear pink mini squid and a large pink scud were all productive. It was windy all morning so my trolling speed varied between 0.8 and 1.6 MPH. There was not a single depth that was more productive than another and in fact I chased meter marks all morning.

No bites for the first hour but we had constant action from 10:00 – 1:00 on 10”-12” cutthroat and kokanee to 11 inches. When we pulled out of the water at 1:00 the final count was 8 fish with 1 kokanee and 5 cutththoat in the box (we promised the grandparents some fish).

Hmmm...I thought that I had included photos. I have more problems adding pictures to my ramblings.

Eleven inch kokes now spell chunkers come august. Does any body know if there still planting koke fry in this lake or are they getting it done on their own? According to the plant reports its been a few years since they have put any in. Glad to hear a few are starting to bite. The surface is alive, ringed up, big pods boiling around the boat but still in their typical early spring non biting watch me get you all excited attitude. Nice report.
