Steel Lake Report Tue 06-29-10

I had a chance to go fishing in the evening so I headed to Steel Lake. I arrived close to sundown at about 9:15 pm. I went with my gut feeling and tied on a Cotton Cordell crankbait that had a wide wobble.

Five minutes into fishing, something smacked my crankbait from below and broke the surface. It fought vigorously in a way reminiscent of a smallie. During this battle, it never stopped fighting, coming toward and away from me. Gosh! How I have nearly forgotten that largemouth bass can put up a good fight.

As it got closer, I saw that it was roughly two pounds. Not wanting to deal with the rail between us, and seeing that it was lightly hooked, I made the line go slack so she could shake the lure free, which it did. I didn’t see the need to take a photo and besides, it was too dark for my flash less, low-tech camera phone

The person that closes the park appeared shortly afterward so I had to call it quits. Not too shabby for a 25 minute fishing stint.

Steel lake has been quite brutal for bass fishing from the shore for about the past three seasons including this one. For me, hooking into this bass was if anything was a welcomed gift.

Always nice to read your report writeups and get a report on a 'home' water for me. Live in the Fed Way area. I tried fishing for one of the supposed lunker trout from the kid's derby weekend after it took place but got nada so didn't write it up. Thanx for the report!

Alright, my fellow Fed Way, resident. 06-29-10 was just the icing. You will need to see my report for 06-30-10 that I just submitted this evening. I am humbled from the experience and blessed by it, and I still can't believe what happened. We know this lunker as "Big Mama" and I graciously assure you that she is not supposed. I know what you mean, with the exception of the 29th and 30th of June, my last 5-6 times at Steel have been skunk outs. See you out there.
