Well yet again I got robbed. I really Dont know what I'm doing wrong.

Im from MD and I fish quite offten. Mostly salt-water but Ive done my fair share of Bass fishing too. All I wanted when I was up here was to catch A trout! ONE TROUT. I cant do it. Ive caught a ton of bass in american lake and countless rock bass but i cant hook up with a trout. Ive been going all over WA hoping to finaly get me one.

Today I went with my soon to be wife to the swimming park of Alder lake. We frist started off at the point using bottom rigs with Eggs on them, then went to power bait, then staight worms. Nothing, while she was watching the bottom rods i tryed using a roster tail without any luck. after getting stuck in the grass and dumpping the bottle of eggs all over. we decided to move over to the dock. maybe after 10 mins of being there and a wonderful conversation with a kid that really wanted to go fishing I hooked up with something. It probably was in the range of 15 in and a few pounds. I hooked him with some worm about 3 foot off the bottom. He put up a great fight and then threw the hook. after that we had nothing bite or even nibble again.

I think NEXT time i come back im gonna come early in the AM and fish all day untill i get one!

If anyone as any tips or places that are better with in about a hour of olympia please let me know. I wanna land a nice trout.

Try Mineral Lake, about 20 minutes further east...continue east on Rt 7, @ Elbe take turn to Morton and Mineral lake is about 10 minutes from Elbe.

Mineral is a trout lake, might not catch anything, but if you do, it will be a trout.

Suggest you pay to use the resort dock or rent a boat. Fishing from dock is usually very good, get past the bouys for the 2#+ fish.

Alder is primarily troll-based lake for both trout and kokes. It being one of the first dammed in the 30s here, much of the original forest was left where it stood. That provides cover for all the game fish but kokes. Alder gear need not be "special" the water is often so clear that kokes are leery. I have measured school of kokes 30 feet long, by eight feet deep mid-summer from 15 to 70 feet. A successful Alder Lake rig is: leadcore on freshwater trolling reel, 30 feet to mono (or better 10lb test), swivel, 6lb test leader and either Dick Night white/w hot pink (note siwash hook should be twisted at lower curve for setting in kokes) or a Triple Teaser (bronze for cloudy days/ white and red sunny days/black with green spots for rain). Dick Knights troll extremely slow so electric motors are best in small crafts, Triple Teaser if a faster troll lure and better for trout applications) The rig should also be placed with a snubber at swivel point. DO NOT USE FLASHERS: Alder Lake Konanee spook very easy and flashers are often too much. Remember to carry vinyl gloves and to use deep red eggs to coat lure and hook. Kokanee are merely lake locked sockeye and all salmon can smell menalin from human skin (especially makes) as that is the smell to warn for bear as well. Learn depth by colors of leadcore and especially, present lure above or to side of schools. First bump, pull 6 inched line from reel and wait for actual strike. DO NOT SET HOOK OR HORSE KOKES, they are soft mouthed salmon. Every time i have fished Alder as stated above i have taken home a limit. I don't fish the late August-September time due to silted water.
