Steel Lake Report - Thursday, September 16, 2010

Despite a miserable looking day and rainy weather, I decided to go fishing if only to relax. I noticed that the water around the dock and in the swimming area was stained green with algae. Yuck! I was hoping this would not negatively affect the bass.

I started with crankbaits and followed that up with jerkbaits. To my dismay, neither was able to elicit a strike. I went to popper mode and unfortunately, that didn’t work either.

I finally gave in to the drop shot rig and attacked with a 4.5” inch roboworm about 1’ off the bottom. It did not produce either, so I changed baits and downsized to the smaller Sniper Snub.

After a few minutes of fishing with the Snub, I returned to my bag to change it up and stumbled across my tube of Megastrike. A-ha! I thought this just might be the missing piece of the puzzle. Make the Snub a beacon for the bass amid the mist of algae and have the Megastrike gel serve as the light. So I put some Megastrike gel on the snub and pitched back into the same spot and worked the rig.

A nice, positive tug sans nibbling shortly followed dragging the rig from the first to the second spot. I reeled up the line and the hook did the rest. Yes, it was small, but hey -- I wasn’t going home skunked.

I had to pack it up after that to pick up the kids. The rain started coming down harder too.

The Good – I did not go home skunked

The Bad – I love the drop shot, but it seems to save my hide from going home skunked too many times. Either that it is what the fish want over what I want to catch them with. Go figure!

Gear:

Cabelas Mag Touch/Curado 101D, 8# Spiderwire Mono, various crank and jerk baits and a Rapala Skitter Pop. (No top water bite yet, Quadfather)

Shimano Compre/Rapala 6Sxi, 6# Invizx, Roboworm, Sniper Snub

Conditions:
Gray, Overcast, Rain, Wind, and algae laden water.

gotta love the drop shot :) people give me a funny look when i cast out far off of a dock using a drop shot and make snotty remarks but they immediately shut up when i am pulling in fish and they aren't! haha and not getting skunked is always a victory :D

You got that right! I get the same looks and some snickers. However, we usually get the last laugh.

Why do people get bent on a dropshot?

Island B. I was in Fed Way making a drop off of a couple of those rods I had. I wound up driving by Steel lake. Don't forget to keep me informed if you think the top water bite turns on there. Thanks for the report.
