We hit the lake late, around 3:30, and met Jerry -- owner of Jerry's Landing -- in the parking lot. Really nice guy. He gave us a few tips and pointed us in the right direction.

There was maybe 8-9" of light easy-walking snow on top of a couple of inches of crunchy slush. Not too bad for walking, last year we were post-holing thru 12" of snow and 3-4" of slush. We stopped maybe 100yds off shore, NW of Jerry's. We didn't want to go too far and lose any more fishing time. In fact, we used a hole we found there so we would only have to dig one more.

I fished a white-bodied, glow-in-the-dark jig with rubber tail (sorry, don't know the name or model), smeared on a little anise Smelly Jelly, and had a crappie on within the first 10 minutes (I had to hang up on my wife to reel it in, LOL!). Had another one on about 20 minutes later, then only one other bump before we left in the dark.

The crappie were caught within the first 3 feet under the ice -- right where Jerry said they'd be.

Beautiful clear, sunny day, great day on the ice.

Thanks, J-Meister. I was just coming back to update my report -- didn't realize I'd messed up my measurements so badly. Maybe 4-5" of snow and 2" of slush. And no, I wasn't drinking -- we forgot the beers in the car. LOL!

It sure was nice to get the first fish of the year. I have this annoying ritual of giving the first fish of the year/season back, no matter how big, so I only came home with one.

Have you fished anywhere else lately? I can't seem to find any reports here or elsewhere for Hog Canyon, Newman or Silver.

Nice report, I'm tempted to try night fishing on the ice, but it gets so much colder after dark,,,, LOL I don't want to get cold. Haha!

It got crazy cold at dusk. As in fingers going numb just trying to untie my Sorels for the drive home kind of cold. If you go at night be sure to pack for it. I do think that'd be fun though, inside a shelter with a heater and a lamp. Maybe shine a light down into the hole to attract the fish? Hmmm
