I write this with some real fear that this lake also will be descended upon by anglers of the likes I witnessed in the Northern Counties. Where fish limits seem to be an ignored joke. My wife and I just got back from our second trip to lake Offut. This is the place to bring the kids for a weekend of family fun. The resort is run by two wonderful ladies, and their children; these people are of the sort one usually only dreams of meeting. I have never met kinder, or more helpful people in my life. I have heard there is public access to the lake, but have no personal knowledge of its where about; so can only tell of our fishing pleasure at the resort itself. We got there a little late on Saturday afternoon, so we elected to set up our tent, and then try a little fishing in the early evening. We used rainbow power bait, 3 feet up off the bottom, straight out from the dock. We had each caught a couple of fine fat Trout in less than 45 minutes. Due to the wonderful cleanliness of the lake, these 4 (12 to 14 oz) fish were the finest main course for dinner I have enjoyed in years. Due to morning rain, we didn't get out on the lake until 9:00 am the next morning. We rented a boat from the resort, and did some trolling with pop gear, and pink wedding rings; tipped with worms. My wife and I had each caught our limit before noon; I was ready to come in for a Trout and eggs brunch, but my better half had other ideas. She had me continue trolling the boat for her while continued to fish with the same rig, with out bait. By the time to bring the boat in (1:00 pm) she had caught and released four more beautiful Trout. The lake has a 5 mph. speed limit, and the resort will not allow the launching of gas motors from its dock; but I can't imagine why you would want to use one on this peaceful and serene lake. It would seem like a crime to make too much noise there; as it might disturb the Bald Eagles that also enjoy the excellent fishing. Twilight and dawn are times reserved for fly fishermen, as the Trout go into an insane top feeding.
