Headed to the north/northeast end of the lake at about 7:30am to try and snag one of the big browns Ive been hearing about. The rain was off and on, mostly off. I set up one rod with marshmallow/worm and the other with marshmallow/shrimp. I switched up to power eggs but still nothing. Finally at around 10:30 after a bone chilling 3 hours I got a bite on the marshmallow/worm, a solid 13" rainbow. Another guy a few yards away hooked one about the same size with a silver castmaster. At about 11, literally right as I was about to reel in and head home, another bite! This time what I thought was just a big rainbow, about 17".

It wasn't untill I got home and really looked at it that I realized it was in fact a german brown! Well, it wasn't the monster I was looking for but it was the first brown Ive gotten from greenlake, and it did put up a fight, so I was happy.

From talking to the locals and from my experience, it seems like the fish have been switching off hitting worm/marshmallow and power eggs on a week by week basis, and they've been hanging out on the north end, closer to the bottom as the weeds have died off. But man its getting cold! Gotta bring gloves next time.

While it's always exciting to pick up any trout this time of year, you still pulled off a good fishing trip, even though I may feel it is not a German Brown, It's still better than watching the television,.. Right?

When you catch a German Brown. You won't have to look very hard to tell it from a Rainbow. Instead, you will see a immediate color difference, and big round dots on the sides of the fish. Where silvery crimson strip exists on the rainbow. It is like no Rainbow you have ever seen.

thanks for the identification tips. One guy told me you can catch the browns at green lake by using a baby sculpin as bait, maybe worth a shot.

Look at my report with a picture of a brown. Motoboat has it right, big round dots on the side. Nice fish though. The one I catch did have a small sculpin in its stomach

German browns are also predators so they have much bigger mouths than a rainbow. I've only caught browns on something that moves, like a lure or live worms.

I wounder if that lake holds any rai/binbow/brown hybrids.

I have tried the baby sculpin bait at that lake many, many times with out any takers. I havent seen sculpin in the bellies, or mouths of any of the fish I have cought. Just trout frys in the bass, and bass fry in the trout along with worms and snalis in all of tthem. Maybe catch a catfish with one in the summer, or if there are any TigerMuskie left in there

the browns are proving to be very elusive this year. i caught them almost every outing last year starting from early november to last february with only a few skunks in between. don't know where they are but they're definitely not aggresively prowling the shallows like they were last winter. at least not yet.
