Did a little fishin this morning. I am sure most of you have read my reports which is why I am just going to say I used the same setup I have the whole month of January. Sorry there wont be a picture today because the 4 trout I caught and the 4 trout my friend caught look like all the other trout that have been caught this month on American. From 9 AM to !! AM my friend and I got 8 to the dock (he got 4 and I got 4) I tried everything to get number 5 but it just was not happening so I decided to call it a day. My friend stayed so he probably went home with a limit.
I got my first 2 within about 5 minutes of each other and then long pause with nothing. Then both my rods go down at the same time luckily my brother in law (1SG's son) came down to the dock to say hi and was able to reel one of them in. (yes he has a valid lic.) and yes I do have a 2 pole lic. My brother in law was pretty happy that he was on the lake for about 5 seconds and was able to reel a fish in.
The lake was beautiful today! no wind and just a little bit of rain. While my friend and I were standing on the dock a lunker of a trout swam right up to the surface and almost stared at us! we are guessing he was around the 20 inch range and really wide. If you will remember from a couple posts ago I also had this happen with a very large Koke. I dont know why this keeps happening to me but it is kinda cool seeing these large fish swimming with no line attached to them, also makes me dream about the big ones that are down there.
A side note my friend was using power bait not power eggs like me but pretty much same colors.
Another great day on American Lake!

Nice job on the catching!!!! Saw a NICE Triploid caught at Little American by a Fly Fisherman a couple years ago in November which had to be in the 25 to 30 inch range. Keep thinning them out so we don't have to fight through them to get to the Koks. :-) Plan to make another run at it this weekend.

I dont think I can do as much thinning as you would hope.....with trout living to be about 8 yrs old and with around 40,000 hold overs every year ( i am not going to do the math) that would be more fish than one person could ever catch, but a nice thought. Everyone keeps telling me to keep thinning, I am not thinning I am just enjoying life. Trust me Rainbows are not my first choice but until the Kokes start biting I have to catch something or I will go crazy.
Do you catch Rainbows when you are fishing for Kokes???? I never have. When I am fishing the spot in American where I always catch the Kokes I have never caught a trout with Kokanee gear. I am almost embarased to admit it but I have caught a couple perch while fishing for Kokes.
Good luck out there this weekend everyone I will not be able to partake in the fun.

Mike@Bills,
Nothing wrong with catching Trout. At least your catching which is better than what I've been doing. And yes, occasionally I will pick up a Bow while fishing for Koks but not too often. I've also picked up Perch when targeting Koks. Thanks for the reports and the great pics.

Good reports thanks, been wanting to get out in the boat but i cant seem to want to brave the cold.Yes in the spring you will get Bow`s while targeting Koks.Few years back i think it was early April, they had planted American about 2 weeks before.I could not get my gear down to the Koks cause just as i had my fly line out and ready to drop the rigger i would get a small Bow.That day the first half a dozen fish i caught where new plants. In fact i do not think i caught a Kok that day,all i caught was those bows. What really sucks while kokanee fishing is not paying attention to your speed and going too fast.Sometimes when your speed is higher than 1.7 you will get one of those things called Cutthroats and that really sucks.......lol By the way i am joking i love catching Cutts by mistake. The ones i have caught have all been 14 to 20 inches, fat and feisty. One of the best things about American is how much it has to offer. If the Koks do not want to play that day i can usually change gear, move to a different part of the lake and still have a successful morning.

I think the reason I dont catch Rainbows while fishing for Kokes is because I use such tiny little gear and go so slow it does not really look atractive to a trout. I know a lot of people show me what they use and it is atleast twice as big and I also see people trolling really fast sometimes.
I guess if you go too fast and you catch a 14 to 20 inch cutt its not a bad thing.
I was just thinking here, when I said I dont catch trout while kokanee fishing I mean with a downrigger. If I am flatlining then yes I will get trout because those little rats will bite anything. Nothing worse than catching 100 trout that are 8 inches.
Good luck everyone keep the reports for American coming!
Mike
