The rumors are true folks, Fernan Lake pre-spawn perch fishing is on the rise which can one mean one thing, Hayden Lake jumbo Crappie will soon follow. I counted over 20 people at the end bay near the last boat ramp and all were catching fish consistently. Ratso jigs under a rocket bobber tipped with maggot proved to be deadly once again and will continue to do so year after year. We ended up keeping a dozen perch and a few bluegill. Fernan lake is considered Family Fishing Waters which means: No size limit and No harvest limit for any fish.

No limit, but plenty of fish? Sounds counterintuitive, if we are to believe the State. Been a very long time since I fished Hayden. It was great back then though. Thanks for the report!

Too good to be true...? I couldn't agree with you more. There appears to be high concentrations of perch in the system yet over 1/3 suffered from some type of fin rot or transparent growth. I've also noticed small black dot parasites covering fish in most lakes in this area and is a growing concern for everyone.
Once again, I believe Hayden Lake is resting on a fine edged blade as Idaho F&G has planted a new species (Kokanee) into the system last year or the year before and raised the limit on trout from 2, 19"+ to 6 trout no size restrictions.

There are in fact limits on trout and bass in family fishing waters. I took this right off the Idaho fish and game website. Wouldn't want anyone to get in trouble.

In response to anglers' requests for more family-oriented fishing opportunities and simplified rules, IDFG has developed the Family Fishing Waters program. The idea is to make it easy, simple and fun for folks to go fishing with the children, and to target waters where beginners have a great chance of catching their first fish. Many of these waters are at parks or areas with other facilities that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Family Fishing Waters are open all year and have a six fish limit for trout and bass. There are no bag limits on other species and no length limits. Family Fishing Waters also provide easy access, and area easily fished by anyone with simple, standard fishing gear. Check the Region maps in the new 2006-2007 Fishing Rules Book for Family Fishing Waters near you. The brochures soon will be available at license vendors and Fish and Game offices. Anglers aged 14 and older must have a fishing license in their possession.

Still no specification of size so one can only assume there is none? Thanks for looking into it, news for me since they first started the program.

There is a 12" minimum length for bass now. There was no size limit when the program started, but that's changed.
