So after fishing for lings at Neah Bay on Saturday I dragged myself out of bed at 5:30am on Sunday to go chase rainbows around American with another buddy using my boat. Was really hoping for kokanee but couldn’t get one to bite but we did have a good day with the bows. My buddy and I went 6/10 with 2 lost at the boat. After being beat up out in the salt I was looking forward to a quiet day on a lake but the wind had other ideas. It was a different scale but it was sloppy again! Add wakes to the wind waves the 20 mph gusts were creating and my 12’ Livingston was rockin & rollin for most of the day. There were times when it’d all die down but for the most part it was struggle to keep the boat on tack. Using the electric to troll was not really an option, had to use the gas just to have a chance of keeping it on course, the rainbows seemed to like it a little faster anyway. 4 of the fish were ~13” fatties with good bellies on them and the other 2 were pretty typical 11-12”ers. We fished from 8-3ish using dodgers and wedding rings tipped with corn, pink maggots and worm. I only fished corn and pink maggots since I was hoping for kokanee all day, that set up accounted for 4 of the 6 fish. All fish came while trolling south into the wind and near the surface. It was great to finally have a good day trolling American as I hadn’t had much luck trolling the 5-6 other times I’ve gone.
Unfortunately not all of the fish cut as well as the pictures I’d seen lately here. The 2 smaller fish and 1 of the bigger ones had nice looking red/pinkish meat. The other 3 larger trout all had yellowish meat, oh well, still hope they taste good after being brined and smoked.
Great weekend of fishing! I'm worn out today but smiling, tight lines all!
