Went out with Glenn to catch some crappies on Long, yes I know it is actually lake Spokane but in the 8 years I have lived here I have yet to hear anyone call it that. I was the designated catcher for the day and just like on the Arm the day before it began with thick fog. After launching we slowly motored down to a fallen tree and immediately starting catching crappies. Once the fog started to lift we headed down river to a couple of our favorite areas and caught more crappies plus a few perch and a few smallies. In one bay I caught about a 3 lb large-mouth on a crappie jig, good fight on a crappie rod. For the day we caught about 38 crappie and kept 26 for Glenn and his brother in-law James to eat, again I was just a designated catcher for the day. Also talked with Scotty509 as we passed by each other. He was out bass fishing some of the same docks we were crappie fishing. The cold front this past week definitely slowed down the bite but it was still a decent day of fishing. Small crappie jigs around downed trees and docks worked the best, the lighter the jig the better. Tip it with a 2 in chartreuse power grub or a 2 in white/chartreuse power minnow. Most of the time we just skipped the jigs under the docks but sometimes it required a bobber just sitting next to the structure. It was a good weekend of fishing but it did come at a cost, I broke two rods and lost a rod and reel. Time to look at the clearance items to refill my tackle I guess.

Nice bunch of crappie. I want to fish Long lake, actually gonna rent a place on the lake in August for a family get together, so I want to get to know where the best places my grandkids can catch some fish will be. Can you tell where you launched and which way up or down the lake you headed? Any other tips?

wrench,
I launched from nine mile resort and headed down river. Right now the crappies are moving shallow to spawn so any fallen trees or docks can hold them. In August the lake will be loaded with small perch and small mouth bass from this years spawn, these will be the primary forage for the larger fish in the lake. The weed beds will also be in full bloom so you should be able to anchor up near one of these and catch perch with worms. Once you catch a small perch just chop it up for bait, perch love to eat their own kind. I don't know where you will be renting a house but there are numerous lilly pad and milfoil weed beds to choose from as you head down the lake.

Rocky,

I can't remember the number of rods I have broken over the years it is just part of fishing kind of like losing jigs while crappie or walleye fishing. Some days you just want to grab a handful of jigs and throw them overboard to appease the jig gods. I must have lost at least ten crappie jigs last Saturday. If you want to catch crappies you have to get in the thick of the fallen trees or up under the docks, you are going to lose jigs. Same thing with walleye fishing if you don't occasionally lose a jig you probably aren't in the right place.
