Went to Green Lake this morning to get in a few hours of fishing before family/holiday commitments in the afternoon. The day began beautifully, with a stunning sunrise as I got to the lake about 5:20 AM... lines in the water by 5:30. Not a breeze to begin with, air temp a balmy 53 degrees. Fishing on the southwest shoreline, near the crew house. Water temp at the shoreline was 66 degrees... water feels warm to touch. Began with standard, Power Eggs (fl. orange & chartreuse). Fifteen minutes in, line goes taunt and I reel in an 11" Rainbow (fl. orange PE). About 6:30, another hit and I reel in an 11 1/2" 'Bow. Shortly after the second fish, it began to rain lightly... the rain stayed with me the rest of the morning... got heavier at times, and seemed to put off the bite altogether. The next three hours produced nada!... tried about every color Power Bait and Power Eggs in by bait bag, with not even a bite. About 9:30 I started getting bites again... the fl. orange began producing... lost two Rainbows to the weeds that are coming on strong... trout would take the bait far out, but bringing them in through the weeds would knock them off the hook. When the bite began to come back on, I tried some spin casting with a brass Kastmaster, had three hook-ups with that, but the fish threw the hook as they cleared the water 3,4, and 5 times. Finally about 10:30 caught my third Rainbow of the morning, a beautiful, bright 12" 'er. Left the lake about 11:00.
Saw several other fishermen in the vicinity, but saw no fish caught. Spoke to one who had launched his raft shortly after I had arrived, he had several "taps" on a wedding ring, but only fish he caught was still fishing with Power Bait.
Interestingly, when I cleaned the fish I caught, I discovered the all three of their stomachs were completely devoid of food, not even plankton... it appears the fish are just not feeding actively right now. Hope your Memorial Day was pleasant and inspirational. PTL!
