I probably didn't pick the best day to get out on the Lake. I normally wouldn't bother with the south end this time of year due to all the sockeye, but with the Huskies season opener scheduled for early evening, I figured that I'd avoid the boat traffic by not heading north. I initially started by trolling for cutts and quickly saw that the entire area seems to be filled with sockeye. If your gear makes its way below 60', be prepared. I did manage one chunky cutt and a couple sockeye that were all released before focusing my attention on perch. The cutt hit at 55' on the rigger, which is right between the sockeye and the thermocline.
For perch, I tried a shelf that I found last winter and anchored up in 22' of water. This was well past the milfoil line but the area still had enough outcroppings of coontail to hold fish. Casting and detecting the take as the gear was dropping proved key as the fish seemed to be a bit spooked near the boat. I managed some good sized fish, to 12", and all the fish I caught were over 8". I kept all the perch I caught, some for eating, most for crab bait. White was the more effective color, as it typically is, and today and I used a small curly tailed grub tipped with perch meat to catch most of the fish.
