I fished Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning at Palmer lake for kokanee. On Monday 1 caught 2 fish in 50-60 FOW and caught the fish at around 40ft down with a small dodger and a homemade red spinner tipped with marinated corn. I camped at the campground at the north end of the lake, the boat ramp here is very steep, and I was barely able to get my boat back out with my little car, next time I will use the wdfw launch at the south end and drive to camp. On Tuesday morning I got out and fished the same spot near the south shore on the north end and pulled in my limit in 2 hours. All fish were in the 12-13" range and were all male. It was my first time to this lake, and we had a great time. I am ready to go back to try some of the bass fishing at this lake.

its just a basic wdfw site. you only pay with the purchase of your discover pass. There are a couple of Pit toilets, several spots for RV or tents, and what seemed to me to be plenty of shade. I got there monday morning, and it seemed to have been full for the weekend, but everyone was leaving, so I nearly had my pick for spots when I finished fishing. the boat ramp here is un-improved beach launch. VERY STEEP, so make sure you have plenty of power to haul your load back up the hill and awd.4wd would be helpful as well.

I have been saying the same thing to myself for the last couple of years Mike Carey. This was my first trip, and honestly I did not know what to expect. There is very little info regarding the camping, so I was a little worried what I would find when I got there. I will be going back!

Thanks for the report. Get many pikeminnows? haha. I look forward to seeing your report in the future when you go for bass. I've seen large and smallmouth at around 3 pounds but never anything larger. As for the kokanee that's about the same size I've seen this year. 12-14" range with the rare 15".

I caught no pikeminnow, but did manage a couple Suckerfish going over 24" up in the shallows near the creek mouth. It will probably be next year when I get there next. An old timer at the campground was talking about SMB over 16" not sure what sort of weight range that falls in, I was under the impression that large was common, maybe I am wrong.

Nice fish! You will not regret a trip to Palmer, Mike. I will be taking a trip to the lake property Memorial Day weekend, which cannot get here quick enough. In 1996 there was a lake record set. The smallmouth weighed eight pounds 10 ounces, just two ounces shy of the state record. There are big ones in this lake, and I have yet to bring in an 8+ pounder, but have landed several that were pigs, and some of them right out in front of the house. Both Smallies and Largies of size in there. The ramp at Split Rock is easier for a car, than the ramp near Chopaka Lodge.
