Headed out to Rock this morning. Got there about 8am and there was one trailer in the lot and not a soul on shore. The wind was kicking pretty hard and the water was fairly murky and a lot higher than I've seen it. I parked my Pilot next to the water an casted off shore around 40-50 feet, standing about twenty feet down shore from where the fence goes into the water with a slip weight and some worms and Powerbait. Managed to hook two fish in succession around 9am, but the moment they were hooked, the darn things would high tail it directly towards the area where the fence submerges, wrap around it a million times (rough estimate) and relieve me of my tackle and a healthy chunk of line (they are probably still there!). That happened twice in a row, even after moving further down the shore after the first loss (seemed like they had it all planned out). Since I wasn't having much luck reeling in my catches, I moved to the point about halfway between the fence line and the concrete structures and switched to a bobber. Hooked a Brown in about ten minutes and brought him in. Only 12", but not too bad. Kept up with bobber fishing until around 1pm and did not get any other bites. Sun was off and on and the wind was getting pretty crazy (the boater with the trailer in the parking lot had pulled out and left), so I headed home. All in all, I ended up with only a dollar or five worth of hooks, weights, and lines being liberated from my box and a semi-decent fish, so I'll chalk it up as a win.

The wife and I are really interested in getting out there on a boat, but we don't have one. Anyone feel like taking a second and third person out in exchange for some gas money?

I left a nice CD-7 rainbow rapala on that fence line one day after I pulled my boat out, darn that thing! I would be willing to take you out as I'd like to hit Rock again and don't really have anyone to go with. I'm a little weary out there because I don't know the lake well, do you? Nice job on getting some fish while some of us are working!

I've honesty never been any further out on Rock than my line off the shore will take me, but I've heard there are some monsters further out. I know there are some dangerous areas, but I've heard that if you stick near the middle, you'll be okay. People who have a little more experience on the lake would be better sources of info on that. Shoot me a message next time you are heading out and I might take you up on that offer- always looking to meet new people to fish with!

I seriously doubt that the fish wrapped you on the fence. That fence only goes a few feet into the water. What you have is a cliff that drops straight off and the fish like to run into the face and hang you up. That is one super tough place to fish from shore. Ouch! During the summer, when the water is super low and super clear, you can see the drop off. I actually slide my wheels over the cliff to launch my boat.

Yes, getting out in a boat helps a lot, but not so much because of "way out", but the fact you can move and can also handle the fish without them dragging you into the rocks. LOL.

Dangerous areas, yep! Best to learn it when it is low, clear, and you are going slow. Still, if you are good on Google Earth, you can pull up views that can almost show you the bad spots. Best, as indicated, to stay out in the middle until you know the water. Have had deaths and near deaths at Rock in the last few years.
