Cutthroat Trout

I learned from a guy at the lake a new method of floating the bait with a bobber. I have gone to this lake a lot but only caught one or two trout..sometimes 3 mostly with worms or power bait off the bottom with a good 3 foot leader and sinker. I learned from wise fishermen that as the weather got colder the trout moved higher and often closer in. October seems to be the month for cutthroats and they are hungry so feeding hard. I got out to the lake about 730 am. I saw them jumping out near the middle. At about 8 they circled in and by 815 I had three fish most likely cuts. All on bobber and worm. I would take one off recast and get one on fast. No more fish till 9am. One more fish then the last one hit when I was reeling in to recast. I went home happy with my 5 fish.. all beauties. The unfortunate thing about these fish is they all inhale the bait so there is no catch and release. I have considering going barb less simply to have the option.

If you are looking to catch and release, just don't use bait. As you noted, the fish inhale the bait making it very hard to get the hook out plus doing damage to the fish to where it will not survive after being released. Even using barbless hooks won't help much. Try just using spinners.
