So I have a couple of fellow WA lakers that I have promised to take out on Lake WA soon so thought it was time to get the Tin Cup in the water and make sure everything was running good so we could make the best use of our time on the water-

As it so happens, today things sort of fell into place where I was actually home by 3:30 and saw the opportunity to get her down the boat launch in time for some afternoon/evening trolling and running of the motors (plus was excited to try out my new Lowrance Gen 2 HD7 finder)!

Now I have been running the motors pretty frequently in the driveway to keep them tuned up and making sure things working properly and have had no problems- I disengage the gas tanks after about 5 minutes and let the gas run out of the motors too so figured I was good to go. We'll get back to that~

Launched at about 4pm at Atlantic city and the lake was like glass!! I fish for springers a lot on the Columbia and have always wanted to try the same technique for a sardine wrapped kwikfish with the mini brad's cut plug so had some nice herring cured up and set out to try a new idea for cutty's!

Big motor roared to life and soon was cruising across the lake to start my favorite troll along the west side of Mercer trolling north. When I reached my area killed the motor and fired up the Lowrance- it was awesome already marking fish so quickly got out my herring and wrapped it on the plug- was going to long line today with an ounce and a half of lead so didn't have to fool around with the down riggers and could focus on the finder.

Went to start the trolling motor and wouldn't you know, could not for the life of me get that thing to kick over! Tried every trick in the book and she wouldn't turn over! Darn!! and it looked so fishy out there- even tried to troll taking the big motor in and out of gear but was afraid I might foul up plugs and didn't want to get stranded across the lake with no motors.

Motored around the corner hoping that maybe after running around a little it would start but to my utter dismay no luck! So it was getting pretty late so finally gave up and put everything away and zoomed back to the launch- at least my main motor was running great!! Got her out of the water and headed home with a sore back and neck from trying to start that darn Yamaha so much. Hopefully can figure out what it is and get back on the water soon as with daylight savings this weekend we have longer days ahead and more time on the water after work for me!

I am off to the Quinault this Sunday with a native American guide to go after some steelhead brutes so will see you on the water soon!

Having spent many hours using a small outboard motor to push my small boat many many miles on SW Washington rivers, I had to learn to get and keep my small outboard motor running. Basically it is either a fuel or spark issue and I almost always was able to identify the situation by removing the spark plug (I can recall using a cigarette lighter to heat up a spark plug - perhaps to remove water condensation in the plug).. Question: What Yamaha model are you using? I am looking at acquiring a new 2015 Suzuki 2.5 hp. Many thanks for posting your reports.

Salmonbarry, I was watching you from my deck and saw you just sitting around out there. When I don't have time to fish I often just check out who's out there with my binocks. I was trying to figure out what you were doing! Funny reading this report. Better luck next time.

@ mikep- thanks, yea pulled off plugs today and were pretty soiled so popped in some new ones and I'll bet that will do the trick- should have thought of that before taking it out- it's a Yamaha 8 hp 4 stroke
@akiviat- haha! That's funny and was wondering what the folks on shore were wondering- hope my explicits didn't reach your ears a couple of times when she wouldn't start!! lol

Bummer about your motor, hopefully the soiled plugs were the culprits. Good Luck!
