After 2 weekends with high winds we were finally able to get onto Sprague Lake. Was a sheet of glass @ 8:00 AM put in. Started with the regular rippin minnows and the red/white flies tipped with worms. Caught 2 trout dinks (maybe 8") that were released and then caught our first steely. Caught one more steely and then the bite went dead. We threw every thing in the tackle box at them and couldn't get anything to take. One of the last lures I hadn't tried was an Apex, so I dug out my old Dr. Kevorkian Apex and had a steely in less than 5 minutes. I had a bright orange w/flakes and a standard orange in the box so I put those on two other poles. By this time it's 2:00 and we have 4 fish in the box which is a slow day on Sprague, but decided to troll back to the ramp. That's when the Apex's started working, including a steely double. Had the ramp in our eye sites and hooked the 10th fish of the day right before 4:00. These steely's are really chrome and this is for the WDFW...2 of these steely's had small egg skeins inside.
Just one more suggestion..bring your heavier leaders. We had 2 steely's hit and launch themselves out of the water and broke off the trail hooks on the Apex's that were tied with 6 lb test so after we got home Sunday I retied all the leaders with 10 lb fluorocarbon. I hope this helps as these fish get bigger. They are starting to get some girth on em and the biggest one we brought home was 18". Keep your hooks sharp and your lines tight.

We started with leaded line but switched to long lining with line counter reels normally @ 175' to 200' back. I had a teardrop 1/2oz weight on one and two 1/4oz inline weights on the other two. The fish were feeding on some sort of bug hatch and they were in the upper water column.

The bugs were grey and they looked a lot like a small mosquito. The bellies of the steely's were full of the larva/bugs.
