Al and I headed back to Sprague after a decent day there Tuesday. I commented on the lack of forecasted wind on the drive over only to find big whitecaps on our arrival. Started out with a quick fish on a rippin minnow followed by 2 hours of cruising with nothing else. We finally found an area where we found the occasional fish. We ended up with 6 fish in the 17-20 inch range. 3 on perch Kekeda fly, 2 on rippin minnow and 1 on a brown spinner. Flies were fished with 1/4 ounce weight ahead of a leader. Tried Dodgers with no luck. Speed 2.0-2.5 MPH. The fish were not as aerial today but did not want anything to do with the boat. Despite the wind we still had another great day on the water.

Thanks for the report, your tuesday report made me decide to fish sprague this morning (east end). Floating rapalas were working for me (1.6-1.8 mph way back on 5 lb fluoro), the bite seemed to get better later in the morning. They were really airborne and I had a hard time keeping them from coming unhooked lost more than half of the hookups. Which hasn't been the case before. Hooked a few casting husky jerks but all came undone. I did not land any steelhead plants.

Rwl. Glad it worked out for you. Bite was better for us later morning. We lost several fish also. The water must have been calmer for you on the east end. I have really never fished on the East end, are there better areas than others? Jim

Nice healthy looking 'bows. I'd rather fish in choppy, windy conditions than glass calm any day. I call it "fishing conditions" and always do well when the surface is roughed up. Enjoy your reports, thanks for posting them. :-)

Jim, I've only fished the west end a couple of times, usually can get something going on the East end. East end is shallower, the fish can hang out around the springs that are by the docks at the other sprague lake resort. It was whitecaps until around 10, that didn't seem to stop the bite, but noticed they were biting better when I was going parallel to the chop at that time. I figured they were facing into the wind or something and liked the lures coming across them, but it could have also been differences in how the boat handled in that direction relative to the wind. If it didn't die down after 10 on the west end, maybe it had to do with wind direction, in the morning it was just ripping from the sprague lake resort cove straight across.
