Looking at the winds and my weekend plans, Friday was the only shot I had to get out, so I blasted to Sequim for a quick trip. I was worried a bit about the winds, but when I got there, it was the fog that posed the biggest problem, though it was okay. Launched later than I'd like, but at 8:00 when I got there, "the Joker" was just picking up his clients and heading out. I was fishing by myself, trying to see if I could handle a halibut solo... Water was fine behind the Spit, but probably lumpy further out. Fished around the Bar. Made one drift over the area I wanted. No bites, but it let me figure out the drift. I was getting to the bottom easily with 20 oz, a spreader and a herring. Reset so I could make the complete drift. I hadn't even gotten back to my original start when I got a good bite. Brought the 30 pounder to the boat after 10-15 minutes. Then the fun started. I had gotten the harpoon equipment out before starting fishing, but wasn't quite ready. I got the head on the shaft, put the ball over the side in the water and got ready, all while holding the pole and fish with my other hand. Then tried to circle the fish so I could harpoon it. After a false try or two, made a good first shot on it. It took the ball under and screamed line off the reel. After a bit I was able to cut the gills, hook the fish up to my "Halibut Leash" and tie it off to a cleat. Back at the dock at 10:30 just as the wind really started to pick up! What a morning!
