We were crabbing for 2 days Labour Day Weekend. Camano Island Area 8-2. What can I say - The worse season I've ever seen. I remember we could catch crab 8" - 9"+, in same area and we did not have to go far away out looking for a good size crab . Now we're lucky if we can catch 6.25" - 7"+ crab and scream WOW!!! That's the Keeper. So sad that good days are gone. If I remember recreational crabbing was good till 2005 season when state gave green light to the commercial crabbers to harvest dungeness crab in Puget Sound. It should be stopped. Commercial crabbers have to go there they belong - OCEAN!!!

Please don't mistake my following comment as support for commercial fishing or crabbing Puget Sound. The State has really been pushing recreational crabbing over the past few years. They even supply videos and pamphlets to help folks catch more crab. On days that crabbing is open, weekends especially, one can barely find an area to drop a pot that isn't already littered with buoys. Towards the end of the season, the crab are still plentiful, just undersized as they have been thoroughly picked through by recreational, native american and commercial crabbers alike. What it boils down to is that for larger crabs, you need to hit the opening days or crab during the winter season when the recreational pressure is reduced.

If people continue to put up with 5 days a week schedules it will always be crowded. Would much prefer 7 days and a shorter season. WDFW is seeing how we will put up with getting everyone to fish at the same place at the same time.
