There were 4 of us going to McNeil Island. We were after rock crabs, we all love the sweeter meat. We put 4 pots in the water at 10:00 and had the first pulls at 10:45. 5 crab. second pull at 12:00 with 6 more crab. The third pull at 1:00 had 9 crab along with 3 of the biggest female dungies I have ever seen. These 3 beauties were carefully released. All rock crab kept were between 6" and 6 3/4". We cooked them on the boat, the breasts were so large we were getting some meat from them, which is almost unheard of with red rock crab. We could have put the pots back in and had 4 limits but with 20 large red rocks between the 4 of us we decided that was enough.

Do you have to stay a certain distance away from McNeil?

No, the federal penitentiary closed in 2011. You cant' go ashore at the present time but you can fish and crab all around the island. Most of the island is now owned by the DNR and administered by WDFW. There is still a state sexual predator facility but it is only in a small area of the island. The WDFW is trying to decide what to do with the island and until they do they won't allow us ashore.
