Went fishing the puyallup up by the mouth of carbon river with my dad towards the end of the day. Didn't get no hits. My dad caught a 16' steelie native, had to let er go. Swallowed the hook and killed it. Too bad you can't keep it after something like that happens. But I guess everybody would say they got a bad hook set if they got a native. :(

16' ? do you mean 16" then its not a steelie or 16# a good steelie and usually hey dont swallow a hook like that. If it died due to a swollowed hook I myself would still take it home and eat it me personally that is. Id claim it on my punch though.

same thing happened to me 2 mnths ago w/ a 12 lb silver, she inhaled a intruder fly which some how caught a gill, first time that has ever happened to me with a fly, One sure way to insure that doesnt happen is to use spinners spoons and flys, switch hooks, when a fish sees eggs or a sand shrimp or scent, they swallow it, flies and hardware they hit because they are pissed, the takes are usually way more violent than with bait, thats not saying that they wont always take it deep in the gills, but your incidental kill will go down by leaps and bounds, and you tend to get alot hotter of a fish.

I meant 16". If not a steelie than what was it?

Here's my take :
The fishing regulations say that a steelhead is a sea-run rainbow trout over 20". Since your fish was not over 20", then I would say its a rainbow trout. You can keep two trout over 14". Anyboby have a different interpretation?

DoubleR is right on - 16" is a legal rainbow trout in the Puyallup - not considered a steelie until 20". Trout retention is open in the Puyallup until Feb 28th below the Electron outflow.
