Me and the boy(6 yr old) headed up to the PO River this aftrenoon. We launched South of Usk and headed toward Davis Slough. The river was 43 degrees and the sloughs were roughly 5 degrees warmer. The river is very low and Davis slough is very shallow and hard to navigate. So we fished the river. As we were leaving Davis I told my son to cast out his rapala and we'll troll it down the bank for awhile. Soon as we set the pole down for the troll, it doubled over. He grabbed it and reeled in a fiesty 19" German Brown. We trolled around some more and had one more hit, but we didn't hook up. We drifted for awhile and the kid kept casting toward the bank, and he starts yelling " I got one, I got one" and a few minutes later he reeled in a 23" Pike. Great Day on the water. Saw a few guys smelt and bobbering in Everett Island Slough, They had there net out a few times! ....and two old norwegians had a 10 lber caught on spinnerbait!

Thanks for the report. Your son is quite the fisherman! I personally don't see anything wrong with keeping pike out of the Pend Orielle in that 3-5 pound range. There are a ton of pike in that river system. I'm glad to see that great fishing on the P.O. is just aroun the corner. Maybe I'll see you out there next month.

Great to see you taken the kids fishing. I know one of the first experiences I had that I can remember was when I was 3 years old fishing early spring in Colorado mountain and it was snowing like nobody's business. I was bait fishing with 2 hooks on the line with 2 worms and I caught 3 trout. I have been a fishing freak ever since. Nice brown and nice pike. There are plenty of the smaller pike (under 26") in the river and in my opinion those are the best eating. Those bigger ones are not as prevalent and are a precious resource that everybody can enjoy. Thanks for sharing!!
