Headed up to the Skykomish in Sultin again. This time I took my father-in-law with me. He was floating sand shrimp on a bare hook and I was floating egg roe on a corky with yarn. We walked down stream a bit to the sandy area directly accross from the boat launch. I had zero luck and my father-in-law hooked a carp. I later learned that our location was not the best. After we finished fishing my father-in-law gave me a book written by Bill Herzog. There is one section of the book that talks about selecting the right spot for steelhead fishing. The book clearly stated anywhere that has a prodominately sand bottom is not good because the fish do not like getting sand in their gills. It would have been nice if he gave me the book before we went fishing. If any knows if this is fact or fiction please comment.

We tried to go back on friday, but as soon as we pulled into the parking area a possible vehicle prowler showed up so we decided to move on.

Another reason they don't tend to hang around sandy bottom/open areas is these fish are shelter seeking during most of the day. They will tuck away behind/under logs and boulders or in deep holes and spend most of the daylight hours sitting in one spot. Most of their movement is done at night which is why Early morning hours and later in the evening are usually best for hooking them. Target areas with large boulders, downed trees, undercut bank structures, and deep riffles or seems in the current indicating "slots" underwater where the fish could lie. Thanks for the report.
