Got to the big eddy first this morning, at pitch black oclock. Was fishing with my ultra light trout set up, so I didn't fish the island, besides it was cold, and my feet freeze through no matter how many socks I wear, today was three pairs.

Free drifted eggs mostly, but tried everything. The fish weren't there. I left at noon thirty, there were only three fish caught. I hooked one, played it for a minute and it broke off, my drag was too tight. Was pretty fun though, it's gonna take skill to get one in on this light setup, but was a lot more fun than my silver rod. Hoping to get a new steelie rod in my stocking :)

Other than that, caught a bunch of whitefish. Lots of 'em. Couldn't keep 'em off anything. They were fun, although the stupid things couldn't get the big hook in their mouth and ended up getting hooks in the head belly area just. A couple of 'em hit just like a steelie and had that fantastic run for like 2 seconds which got my blood pumping for a second until they stopped, rolled and came up to visit. The river is dropping and really clear.

(socks-quality not quantity) sounds like santa needs to put some quality socks in your stocking. quality socks are like quality shoes/boots once you use them you will never go back. also remember when your in the outdoors cotton kills.

Whitefish hey? Are these similar to the ones found in the Great Lakes? If so, I'll have to figure out how to catch a few for the smoker. Thanks for the report nate

I think I must have abnormally cold feet. I have wool socks, the smart wool ones from rei, and I triple up, and the water at the sky when it's cold still gets to 'em. I get boot warmers, didn't have 'em that day.

Nate - I got a pair of Underarmer Heat Gear Boot socks (got em at Cabela's). I wear them under a pair of thick, above knee wader socks I got on sale at O.E. Works great for me!

i dont have waders, but i have xtra-tuff insulated boots, They were my work boots (-20 degree F) freezer, now they are my fishing boots but if you are only fishing in boots they work great, when its time for a new pair get the insulated ones...
