The skookumchuck was dropping into shape so we wanted to fish it, but so did numerous other guys. below the dam was packed! We saw many guys walking out with their limits when we arrived. Found a spot and fished for a few hours. Didnt get any bites, but also didnt see any fish roll or jump by our spot. So we decided to move to down below the hatchery. Saw some fish jumping around but after a few more hours of fishing every inch of that part of the river with no bites we decided to move again. Went back up above the hatchery and found a cool spot that no one was fishing. Second cast fish on, netted him, a lil dark but not bad. After that my bf hooks into a nice fish, snaps his line after a good fight. A few cast later he hooks up again, fish jumps like crazy spits the hook. I hook into a monster that swims directly at me at full speed, hook falls out. We both hook into 6 or 7 fish each with all of them spitting the hook. Left with one fish, but it was really fun to hook into more than one fish!

WoW you should use 1/0 black gamakatsu hooks with barbs and set the hook REALLY REALLY hard when u feel a bite cause that would suck to lose so many

I just started fishing this river this year because of the other rivers' early closures. Its late march and the hatchery run is still strong. Im surprised myself that the run is still going. Saw many people walking out with steelhead that were real bright, and saw more fish jump and roll than when we were there two weeks ago.

And it is true, I am definitely not setting the hook hard enough. Of the few steelhead Ive caught, so far, they've been hooked in only a little bit of skin in the mouth.

+1 on the hard hookset. 1/0 Owner cutting points are my favorite. If you don't feel like you got a good set the first time, you can drive it home a second time as well. I hate it when I cracker fish, so I'd rather lose it right away than after playing it for a bit. I bet I've seen you down there! Next time, say hi!

I 2nd the 2nd hookset - I've gotten into the habit of two hooksets every time now.

Dang it I just looked at the regulations and found out you can use barbed hooks right now, wish I would have known that on Monday when I hooked into a nice one up by the dam on a hook that I pinched the barb on, oh well next time right. Great report tight lines everyone
