Fellow Anglers,
Went to Cow Pond late afternoon, haven't been there in what seems like forever, since last report, any hoot half dollar size lillies are up and so thick for this time of year that they have schrunk the pond to quarter of size, most ever since I started fishing this little gem years ago. Where I lost good sized bass in last report is totally covered in the half dollar sized lillies not to mention grass behind is growing up taller than 5' so making it even more difficult for fly rod casting, not to mention that after my cast the line gets wrapped in pads every time, so it was difficult. As soon as I waded in noticed a large turtle in grass about knee deep, picked him up and noticed large bumps on each side of his head, weird, showed my trusty dog she sniffed at it and it went to bite, pulled it back since she does not know about these guys, but it back and she played with it like getting a rock off the bottom until she lost interest. So first cast over the pads to open spot, spooked must have been 20 fish on the surface, probably bluegill and crappie, maybe some bass typical of what they do when the pads are up is sit in the open water. Any way no sooner then the popper hit the water, gave it a twitch and Wham, bluegill as big as my hand, fat as heck and hard to bring in because the first thing they do is dive for the pads, should have switched tippet to spiderwire line but was using mono and paid for it on the next couple of catches. It was like shooting ducks at a shooting gallery for the next hour, despite getting hung up on pads or grass or something else just about every cast it was still one of those evenings you dream about, one cast a huge bluegill, next cast nice sized eating crappie, bass were right next to bank in reed grass and even harder to catch, managed only two, about 12" but still challenging giving the conditions, no large ones this time. Figured I get the pontoon boat next trip even though there is hardly open water fish are stacked along lillie edge and in the little bit of open water, also noticed fish hitting top even in the thick of the pads. Bass close to shore I'm sure were going after frogs and dragonflies since they are abundant. Overall a great evening. The other place just no more than 2 miles from this spot is also loaded with Bass and Crappie, no bluegill but even more difficult to fish since banks are steep and thick with brush, grass, and sticker bushes, but managed to slip down to one spot and able to make long cast over all the crap to open water. Fish were hitting surface everywhere and that got the blood flowing, only manage two strikes and one nice crappie, but got frustrated with tangles eventually knotting tippet and vowed revenge when I come back with pontoon boat to slay em, which I know I will if I can just get the line on the water. Can hardly wait. Until next time Tight Lines.

Trent,
Let me know where yours are and I'll do the same just do not know how we will do that, by the way posted the cow pond once and believe it is still there, only need small boat and fly rod with assortment of poppers, nymphs, & dry flies to catch big bluegill and crappie.

I slipped in there for a bit last evening myself and had some fun with a few and got my ass kicked by a huge bass. I've been fishin that pond off and on for a long time and it truely is a gem. I was throwing a perch topwater and after the bass took it from me, I switched to plastics and got into a couple in the grass and the edge of the lily's. Been meaning to get my flyrod out there and will do so shortly. Good luck out there and yes I put all the big bass back

Capt. Longrod,
So top water fishing with a perch color, great, sorry you lost her. Always knew there were big Bass in there. Those half dollar sized lillies are a pain to fish around though aren't they. The fish in there dive right for them every time they get hooked, might want to try Spider Wire, or some other braided line, cuts right through the pads. If you have fished it for years than you know also the pads seem to be the thickest I ever have seen them so early in the year huh. Since you also fly rod which I do too, might want to try the leader in braided line also, I know that sounds weird but it still works even with nymphs, have you caught any of the large bluegill in there or the crappie? The other day had someone yell at me from the road that I wasn't going to castch a thing, probably not a fisherman and I let them go on thinking that since the less people that fish it the better. Glad to hear too your a catch and release fisherman, you know as well as me that only means better fishing for us in the future. Have you ever caught fish in their that have like gashes on their backs? Those are from the fish eating birds called Cormorants that hit the pond for a couple of months just before spring, go there constantly during that time and chase them out, although every year and every time I chase tham out they are right back there the next day, they know a good pond for fishing when they get their belly full too. Big black birds with yellow bills these Cormorants can devistate the fish population if not harrased to leave and every year it seems like there are more and more, like the older ones that have offspring bring them there the following year. Must of seen and chased out of there one time 15 of them darn birds, so if you see them give em hell, better yet try to kill one if you can. The other day when I fished it I also saw a turtle in there and never have before, only goes to show that the pond is truly a great ecosystem for as small as it is. Well like I said glad you had a great time fishing it and hope you respect the gem like I do and do not give the spot away as well as catch and release for our future great fishing days. Till next time, Tight lines Bro! By the way heading there this afternoon be in a white canoe, first time I have ever fished it with a boat because the pads and tall grass behind you are making it about impossible to cast with fly rod.
