This report is for both Friday and Saturday:

Friday: Arrived at porcupine right before sunrise and immediately noticed the left tire on my buddy Glenn's trailer had a big bulge in it. As we were contemplating what to do it blew. Sounded like a gunshot, luckily he has a spare. We fished the morning and around noon decided to change the tire. Scraped up enough tools to swap them out. (my truck his boat) Now on to the fishing. It was hot and heavy for about two hours. Any color jig and a night crawler was all you needed. We had the spot all to ourselves for about three hours. Total catch was over 50 Walleyes with the largest about 22in and 4 lbs.

Saturday: We were out on the water before sun up. Temp was about 20 deg and I think my hands still haven't thawed out. The catching was much slower and the best color was a red jig head with a pumpkin/chartreuse grub body. Lots of little worm stealers but we still managed over 35 Walleyes for the trip.

Water temp: 42 deg
Depth: 20'-40'
Bigger fish were shallower, the deeper we tried the smaller they got. Just dragged jigs both days with a very small lift.

In the area where we were I did not see anyone trout fishing. There were at least 13 other boats near us on Saturday and all were Walleye fishing.

Where were you fishing at? Could you see the fish on your fishfinder or do you have a secret to finding them? I'm trying to learn this lake, but its so much water to cover finding fish. Thanks for the report.

Steve,

Unless the walleyes are suspended up off the bottom it is often very hard to see them on your depth finder. We have been fishing the Lapham area of Porcupine Bay. Basically you launch out of Porcupine, turn right, and head for the large red house up on the hill. Their is a creek channel that enters the bay near there and has over time created a large flat that the fish have been holding on for the last month. My guess is the rising water level has made them hesitate on their migration upriver to spawn. I wouldn't hesistate to start working upriver if their not biting on the flat. Checkout flash earth, a lot of the photos were taken when the water level was low and show a lot of the structure that is underwater at full pool.
