Decided I needed a break from remodeling work, prepping for a wedding reception, and practically no fishing time. After receiving some positive feedback from a good friend last week I called my fishing buddy to see if his schedule was open, it was, so we planned a trip.

On the water and fishing by 10am working the north shore across from Lincoln. Catching was slower than expected but my buddy put two chunky spring planters in the cooler, and we both lost a couple, not to mention several that hit and didn't stick.

After a couple hours, I decided it was time for a change in scenery so we pulled gear and headed north to Split Rock which is usually a productive spot early in the season. We weren't there 5 minutes before we had one on, and immediately after that, picked up a second one. I remember thinking this was a positive and promising sign, then the bite fell off. A few drive-bys and no hookups, but we persevered and spent the rest of the afternoon there.

Water surface temp was 71.2° - 74.3°, partly sunny to bright sun and back to partly sunny, nice breeze and wind chop before noon, then tapered off to a hint of a breeze to about mid-afternoon then a decent breeze again before we headed in.

I long lined a plug on mono as a result of last week's intel, but it was not real productive especially after it started warming up. Even so, it produced two, but all the rest came on flies trolled on leaded line. A Frisky Jenny Trick r Treat was the most productive fly yesterday and is what my buddy used all day. I dragged a Frisky Jenny Black Ant early, then switched to a Kekeda orange after my buddy's success, but couldn't seem to get them to stick on either fly.

My buddy managed a nice 18" carryover in his limit and I slogged it out to boat 4 by 5pm when I called it a day. One shy of two limits this early is not bad at all. The spring plants are chunky yielding nice fillets. All of the spring plant fish were stuffed with mysis shrimp, their gullets were just packed.

My buddy was out "6 colors" and I ran my leaded line setup out 200' which was more than I have ever used at Roosevelt before. Not sure it made any difference. Probably would have been more productive had I run downriggers instead, but didn't.

No pics since I forgot to bring my camera but at least I remembered bait and ice. ;-)
