1/12/2015 9:51:00 AMCoyoteCrazy - Sounds familiar, sort of the same results for us Saturday. I did figure out they wanted the flies at 2 mph and the plugs at 3. That means we couldn't mix the two as it would just not work.

Sometimes, if I am confident that fish are seeing my lure but not biting (and it isn't on the downrigger), I will hold the rod and give it a pop or two forward, and then follow it back on a tight line, varying from one pop up to three. Most of the time, the bite comes as I am pausing the lure, following it back on a semi-taut line. While this is a classic brown trout technique, I have had good success triggering rainbows, kokanee, smallmouth bass, walleye and atlantic salmon with the "pop-pop; pause" cadence. While I haven't fished Roosevelt this way, it might work. The drawback is being out in the elements, holding the rod, it gets a little chilly.

1/12/2015 1:14:00 PMBummer CC. Maleman said it was a lot slower day for him also. The fish can't keep biting the way they have been for last month or they will be gone. Did you try shallower and in the bays? Or was it the fishing day and not the catching day?

1/12/2015 8:13:00 PMYearofthecraig: I used to do that for Kokanee on Lake Merwin when I lived on the westside, never thought about it for trout. I put a lot of hard turns and play with throttle alot(hard on then even out then drop it all the down) I will give it a try next time out.
Widebear: I watched another boat that was going into the little bay/inlet across and a little up river from Sterling Point. He would go in and then come out tight to the bank and was getting consistent action, so I went to the next "bay" down just past where all the rocks stick out that have the marker on them and tried to duplicate. We picked up 5 fish within an hour but then nothing, had a couple more bites but nothing stuck.

1/12/2015 8:19:00 PMUnrelated to fishing, I had just started changing gear to the apex when I look up and this boat is coming right at me, WDFW. Not a big deal in itself, but the first question he asks is, "How many fish do you have?" I replied 1 because that was our sum total after 5 hours, the officer started laughing asked how long we had been out and then checked the cooler and had us open up the seats, he had a hard time believing we were just that bad at fishing. One other note, some boat had some luck fishing for burbot, there were a couple heads left in the middle of the ramp when I pulled.

I would rather try the plugs fast at first and then if it isn't working slow it down and put out a spread of flies, IMO, you are not presenting either presentation to its fullest effect by trying to go somewhere in the middle, atleast with the lipped crank baits.
