1/21/2015 8:53:00 AMMorning MoreFish - Nice catch, the surprise chinook looks like a kokanee to me - awesome fish! I don't fish the arm much so I'm not much help with the where's up there. As far as tackle goes orange bellied Rapalas in jointed or straight have brought fish to the boat. They have not worked as well this fall/winter as last. 3 mph 175 feet back seems to be the ticket on them. The flies I use that have consistently worked best are orange or perch Kekeda. We troll the flies in a zig zag pattern at 2 to 2.5 mph lately. 18# lead core line at three colors is the ticket with 50 to 60' fluorocarbon leader. We don't seem to need dodgers with these flies. Tip with worm or artificial bait.
All of that said we have really worked to get our limits the last three weeks.

1/21/2015 11:55:00 AMI have to disagree with you guys on the species identification. That is the tail of a Chinook. Kokanee (Sockeye) do not have tail spots. I would say it could be a silver, but those tail spots SCREAM Chinook.

1/21/2015 12:20:00 PMChinooks often work their way downstream from CDL lake. The mouth seems to have black gums, also a Chinook trait.

1/21/2015 7:37:00 PMThanks for the guidance Alan! I will adapt my presentation for next time out. The picture isn't that great especially after being smashed in the cooler all day. It was indeed a chinook, black spots covering the tail and back. Black mouth/gums and full of sharp teeth. He did put up a great fight, much better than the chunkier rainbow did.

I have fished lake Roosevelt a bunch and never got one. Maybe you are onto something? I have had the plug removed on the take-down off the downrigger on 8# line. Always makes one wonder what in the world grabbed it. Something big for sure.

1/22/2015 10:05:00 AMNice to see the 'nookie. We've caught a few, maybe 3, in our almost 10yrs of fishing there. Some say they aren't good eats, but our experience is just the opposite, they are great table fare. Nice 'bow too!
