Went out fishing Saturday morning with my Dad, Brother, and Girlfriend to try and catch some trout. A week ago we had slammed some rainbows down past the Sanpoil on Lake Roosevelt so we needed to check and see how well they were biting up north near Gifford.

We got down to the beach at 7:15 just after sunrise. About 10 minutes into fishing I was already getting hits on my poles. Had a hard time hooking 'em though. After re-baiting my hooks I finally landed the first fish. Out of the 4 of us down there the fish seemed to only pay attention to my fishing poles for the first hour and half because no one else was getting any bites. Sometimes the fish just like to give you special attention. Once I had 2 fish on the stringer the bite slowed down a little bit so I decided to reel in my poles and started walking around casting a spoon to try and stir the fish around and hopefully get them to bite my fishing compadres poles. First cast...I had another fish on. 3 fish on the stringer, all of them mine. LOL.

Things turned around however as my GF landed #4. Dad landed #5 and #6. Then I landed #7. My brother still didn't get the skunk out of his bag though. Turns out he didn't have anything to float his worm off the bottom like the rest of us had! If we had known that sooner we would've geared him up accordingly. It was around 11 O'clock when we learned this and only had a half hour of fishing left before we had to leave. So we set him up with the proper tackle to try and get him to at least catch 1 before we left. Sure enough, at 11:15 he landed #8 and the last fish of the morning.

We probably would've limited out if we had hooked up on every fish that bit but sometimes they are finicky. The bite was pretty darn consistent for us though. They seemed to like the nightcrawler with an orange corky float bobber about 2' off the bottom the best. Corn powerbait was also producing results but I swear they bite harder on the worm. I must've missed 6-7 bites on the powerbait and they didn't seem to hold on to it for very long. With the worm they'd play with it a lot more which made hook-ups much easier. In the end it was a very successful and fun morning of fishing!

Ahoy Lambojac! Thanks for the report. Always enjoy your photos. What kind of spoon do you use?

It was a yellow spoon with red diamonds painted on it. I always seem to catch at least 1 fish when throwing the spoon. No more. No less. Every single time it seems like.

Ahoy Lambojac! Thanks for the quick come back on your spoon! I hear you about one lure always working. I use a Panther Martin Regular in 3/8 oz.. It too is yellow with red spots and silver blade. I always catch SOMETHING on this lure! Usually, not always, I hookup within 5 casts. I've tried five different colors in the same conditions with minimal results. Check out my report.
