Tried my luck again in the morning and evening. I went to the same area I hooked into a fish the day before. I started off in the predawn hour since I heard these fish have a good surge of movement in the moning. I lost some sinkers to the killer rocks on the bottom, but no biggie if you are stuck on the bank right?
I had a pretty solid hit after a few hours of fishing, but could not seal the deal on this one. At around 8am I hooked and released a wild chinook. What a fight even with the stout gear I have to use. The fish made several leaps that were impressive to see. I leanded out over the fish, while it was in the water, and unhooked it pretty easily with my long nosed pliers. That was it for the morning.
In the evening I fished up and down the area looking for a honey hole. I found what I though was a pretty good looking spot and stuck to it at this location for the rest of the evening.
I'm glad I did! I landed a second hatchery fish on a bright pink spin-n-glo, with eggs under the egg loop. The chartreuse one didn't get any hits today. Every time I pulled a line in to rebait, I rotated between two rod with different colors trying to identify a preference.
I don't know if the color is a big deal or not. I know the fish are hitting out of aggression and the trick is placing a bait in their path.
Some of the boat anglers are really good here. I watched several guys pull into their spots and have their limits in nothing flat.

Thanks for the high-five. I bought Scott Haugen's book "Bank Fishing for Salmon & Steelhead" in the winter. Gave it a quick read for anything that may have been new and exciting, or unknown to me. It was pretty basic stuff (still a good read), I really liked the section about reading water and picking holding or travel zones that the fish will use. I hope I can put this to use upriver on the Snake during steelhead runs.
