Today, I decided to head out to Ward lake to see if the Kokanee were active. Unfortunately after I lunched my boat I found out that the locking bar for my bow mount trolling motor and rusted up, and I was unable to lock the trolling motor in the down position. I had a few buckets I threw behind hind the boat to slow me down, but I was going 1.9-2 mph which is a little too fast for kokanee. I still put out my crank bait and I did put out a crystal basin tackle wild thing dodger with one of my nerka bugs. I set the riggers at 18 and 20 ft. In the first 5 minutes of trolling the bug rod popped out and line was peeling off the reel. I had a trout that was close to 3 lbs, looked like a big male. Unfortunately when I was trying to get my net the fish came unbuttoned right at the back of the boat. It was a great fight though. I have never hooked a fish that big before at this lake, good to know they are swimming around. I ended up catching three fish on the bug rod, and hooked another 12 on the crankbait. I caught a couple small cutthroat which I released, and kept 5 rainbows. I cleaned the fish and they had nice orange meat, so I am thinking possible hold overs from last year. When I got home I busted out the sanding bit on my dremel tool and cleaned all the rust of the trolling motor. I should be good to go for next time.
