Went to Cottage for the last time this year before it closes. It has been a good lake for myself and my little one there and this weekend was pretty good.
We went there at around 8:30 am and there was only another guy fishing there. Everything was really slow for the first 2.5 hours and we only saw one single bite that snapped (old knot...). We tried different colors for the power eggs, spoons, but nothing
I was about to give up when i decided to try a very long leader (about 3 meters), which is much longer than what we usually used there. Well, it worked and we ended up with 7 trouts in the following 2.5 hours, plus a few bites we lost.
I have to say... the water looked very nasty with the algae issue that his lake has every year. Look at the picture i am attaching... maybe that is the reason why the fish were so much closer to the surface, oxygen levels are probably not great.
Plus, most of the fishes we caught didn't really fight much. One of them actually i thought we had lost the bite, but then i retrieved it and there it was.
I am a newbie angler still, so i think we had 4 rainbows and 3 other type of trout (is it a cutthroat?). I just know they look different.

Overall, great way to close this year's season on Cottage for us. Watching he little guy running around the dock pulling fish, preparing the bait, casting and unhooking all by himself makes me a very proud dad. That is the next generation of anglers right there. Plus, great people fishing on the docks, too.

alxtm... Awesome report! Was at Cottage last week and had almost no success on trout, although I did score on Yellow Perch. I never considered going to such a long leader (3 meters would be over 10')... but you are no doubt correct in thinking that the oxygen level would be greatest at or near the surface. You have a mixed catch of Rainbows and Cutthroat trout (4 Cutthroat and 3 Rainbows)... best way to tell the Cutthroat (the red slash under the throat is often very faint before spawning season) is that the mandible (jaw) line extends past the eye of the fish. In the Rainbow, the mandible stops at the eye. Great fishing... and what a joy to see your son already into the sport! PTL!

Thanks, Stansjoy. I have to say, i never ever used such a long leader and that was a last resource, but well, it worked.
I appreciate the explanation about the fishes, always learning something here.
Now i need to find another place to fish during the winter, i can't simply just wait for a warmer times.
