First time out shrimping by myself (well actually with the wife, but only I have my licence) and thought we would try out Camano to avoid some of the crowds in Everett! Well we arrived a little on the later side 7:30 and there was hardly a spot to park the trailer, good news is that everyone was already on the water so only one other boat at the ramp. Even though it is two lanes really only one lane can be used at a time since it is so narrow.
Ended up landing just under half limit with our short time, did not get the first pot dropped until 8:30 due to some trim motor malfunction. Managed to scrape up almost half limit in the short time before all pots had to be out at 1 PM. Also I only had one pot so I was not too dissapointed, and pretty good size to most of them. There was a decent amount of people spread out up the beach from the park and across the water near baby Island. I did scope out where the commercial guys were, a little further away from all the recreation people so might have to try that are if I get back out there.
We motored around and did a little fishing while the pots were soaking, could not scare up any lingcod, but did manage to get a couple flounder (or sole) into the boat for dinner. They really started biting once I put a strip of hearing on the hootchie I was bouncing along the bottom (got no love with the plastic curly tail jigs). Made the simplest of decent devices using an crate inverted with a 4 lb downrigger ball, would have used my pot puller to drop and retrieve but no rockfish. All the stores around were sold out and I did not one that put more holes in the fishes mouth.
