The three of us went over to Les Davis Pier on Ruston Way to get a better feel for how to fish this popular dock. Conventional wisdom holds that you can catch perch and lingcod off the left side of the dock, and dogfish and flounder off the right side. We tried the right side with a high low rig using shrimp as bait. I released 4 small pacific staghorn sculpins and 6 small rock sole. At 2pm, after 3 hours of fishing, we decided to try for perch on the left side of the dock. Oddly enough, we got many bites but few hookups. I suspect the perch may have been sucking the shrimp off our hooks!

Although the dock was crowded, I only saw one person lucky enough to hook onto a decent sized flounder. Most other fish were too small or illegal to keep (rockfish). We left around 5pm, as the current began heavily sweeping everyone to the left and tangling everyone's lines together. It may have been the time of year, but the flounder here were very small and the perch were difficult to hook onto. But the weather was nice, and everyone at Les Davis is always friendly, so we enjoyed our day there. It's always more fun to catch smaller fish than nothing at all. I look forward to returning again later in the year to try again for bigger fish.
