American used to be my home lake. As many times as I fished it , I'd like to pass along what did work. Not once did I ever get a rainbow trolling American. But for kokanee throw pop gear or ford fenders trailing live maggots(they won't touch much anything else) on a wedding ring about 80ft back and troll in circles between Silcox island and the old seaplane base. Vary your depth until you find them. For rainbow it's a whole different approach. Mix up some egg clusters, cream corn, and quaker oats. Head over to the VA about 100yrds out, throw your anchor out and start chumming. Bait your hook with red eggs and corn with a marshmellow to keep it off the bottom. Of course this was 20 years ago but when I was down last spring the kokanee fishing hadn't changed a bit. They're still in there. One last thing. If the catapillers are hatching, trust me, find another lake!!!

Thanks for the info Golfball, I was actually fishing for RBT or Kokanee, and doing what had worked for me in the past here. I have pop gear, but don't use it much just don't like that much stuff on my line. I have thought of trying chum but have not yet. That chum recipe sounds like something to try. It's funny I had heard years ago what you described for rainbow as the way to fish for Kok on American. When I get them I normally get a of both.
