Got my aquatic invasive species decal for the year. The folks there are very nice. I would give them a call in advance otherwise you might not be able to get your inspection done before an outing and its a $250 fine... Was at the lake and thought since I would be there anyways, why not give it a shot and see what I could drag up.

Launching there without a dock is always interesting. I've managed to do it without getting wet which is great since it was on the cold side for the area.

I've had good success in the summer targeting kokanee and understand there are cutthroat per WDFW. Despite trolling around for various speeds, presentations, bait scent, and depths, could not get anything to hitch a ride on my gear. Did not have much time before it got dark and spent a good 2 hours trying for anything. Anyone have tips for winter fishing this lake? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the report. There are some early season/winter reports on here from years past. Did you have a fishfinder to spot fish? I think they are really shallow now until it warms up - even in April they hang in the top 30 feet. You will catch the odd cutthroat when trolling for kokanee, but legal sized ones are rare.

Random marks on the finder at 20-25 feet and a few around 40. Always had a long line out. Used the rigger to “target” marks. It was nice to get out despite only catching a skunk.

Your report is a good reminder about the AIS permit. The online renewal process is easy and will save you time at the launch. Keep in mind that if your watercraft is under 16' and less than a 10 hp engine, the annual fee is only $20.

I start on Samish around April myself. Tight lines!
